My Experience Moving From Orlando, FL to Raleigh, NC.

First let me say I was born and partially raised in Philadelphia, PA. I'm from a big city and when I was young my parents decided to move to Orlando, FL. I lived there for over 20 years before we got tired of living there. Between the constant heat and just a few bad things that happened, we decided it was time for a change. Unfortunately during our hunt for a new state to settle down in my Mother unexpectedly passed away from Cancer. That did not slow us down. It was all of our dream to move and we did not only in honor of my Mother, but it was clear we needed a fresh start. I'm sure many are asking why is a grown woman in her 20's living with her parents, well I have my reasons and right now life is great and there's no need to be on my own, especially when I am single with no kids for the moment. It gives me a chance to save money, plus at the time I was helping my Mother.
So during the search for a new state during the time my Mother was alive, we looked into Denver, CO and Charlotte, NC. My Father and I decided to go with the state my Mother (his Wife of 25+ years) said she loved. Also part of her family live there too. We settled on North Carolina, in Raleigh to be exact.
When we first moved to Raleigh, I was home sick and I cried in the inside. All my siblings are in Orlando, but to add a little comfort I have family already here in North Carolina, so it's not like we moved here with literally nobody, but still things were clearly different. It's a lot of New Yorker's, Virginia, Philadelphia, people here. So the city is very interesting with a nice mix of diversity and different culture. The weather is lovely and we actually get all seasons. The snow is beautiful too. I love it here, but it lacks alot for it to be a growing city. Both Raleigh & Charlotte.
PROS OF LIVING IN RALEIGH, NC
- Affordable living
- Beautiful City, Scenery to be more specific.
- Good Paying Jobs, even in retail.
- The Entertainment that is here is never a let down.
- Diversity, lots of it and I love it.
- Lots of shopping places, if you like to shop.
- Clean Air.
- Free Museums for the family.
- Beautiful State Parks.
- Family Friendly, actually perfect for families.
- Good Healthcare, and Hospitals.
- Happy unbothered people.
CONS OF LIVING IN RALEIGH, NC
- Not much Entertainment, literally.
- Overcrowded. Raleigh is pretty big, it appears small since everything is so close together because of how it was built.
- Not many Jobs.
- Unexpected rent increases with Apartments. Ask before signing lease.
- Slow paced, which is surprising since there's a lot of people here and it continues to grow each day in population.
- Public Transportation could be better. Time for a Light Rail for the city.
- Nightlife could be a lot better.
- The KKK, avoid small towns outside of Charlotte & Raleigh. They (the KKK) are very well alive in North Carolina, just in small towns as expected, which is common in nearly all states.
I'm sure many of you are scratching your heads since clearly my "PRO" list outweighs the "CON" list, so let me just say Raleigh is not bad at all. I guess being from a big city and living in a big city before moving to Raleigh caught me off guard at how different it is. I'm use to more entertainment and stuff to do in general, and Raleigh lacks that. In fact, from what I hear North Carolina in general lacks that for it to be big.
I'm in no rush to leave since it is comfortable here and it's not bad, however I do plan on possibly moving back North. Going back to Florida is a last resort. If you want to know more about living in Florida from my point of view just let me know. I am very raw when it comes down to stuff like this. If you have any questions feel free to ask me.
